About The Society
In October 2023, with the main purpose of acquiring the Ashendon pub freehold, we formed a Community Benefit Society called the Ashendon Community Pub Society Limited, with adopted Model Rules for Community Ownership sponsored by the Plunkett Foundation and registered as a Community Benefit Society with the FCA.
The Founding Members, and therefore the current formal Management Committee, are Luke Jamieson (Chair), Paul de Lusignan (Vice Chair), Andy Howes (Treasurer), and James Morris (Secretary).
The Management Committee is responsible for running The Society in line with the Rules, making prudent financial decisions to ensure the sustainability of the community pub and The Society, and the community seeing the benefits prescribed by our Rules.
The Society is a member of the Plunkett Foundation via the Plunkett Community Co-operative Network (PCCN): Registration PFCB0580.
Our Mission
To save the Ashendon pub by acquiring the freehold as a community asset and appointing an experienced tenant who will grow the business guided by a community-led vision.
Our Vision
To reopen as a vibrant food, drink, accommodation, and social destination,
where everyone is welcome.
A local social hub that helps village life thrive and local villages connect.
Responsibilities of The Society
The Management Committee is responsible for managing the affairs of The Society in the same way as the board of directors is responsible for managing the affairs of a limited company.
Our key responsibilities are:
Organise and supervise the purchase of the Ashendon pub
Manage and monitor the financial affairs of the Society
Oversee any refurbishments and enhancements to the property
Oversee the lease and manage the relationship with the tenant
Appoint the tenant including any replacement tenant
Ensure the Society conforms with all applicable rules and regulations
Sound Management
of The Society
The Management Committee will hold formal meetings at least quarterly with an agenda that ensures sound management. The Committee will address critical aspects of the business, including a review of the SWOT analysis and risk register, the tenant, our community, membership, finances, legal practices, environment and social sustainability, fundraising, conduct, anti-fraud, the building and health & safety.
The Committee will provide members with an annual report which will set out key financial statements together with The Society’s activities during the previous financial year, plus any plans for the following year.
